1. La comunità dei segnanti, composta da persone sorde e udenti, richiede il riconoscimento della lingua che utilizza. L’Italia, avendo firmato e ratificato la Convenzione ONU sui diritti delle persone con disabilità, in cui sono contenute precise disposizioni per il riconoscimento e la valorizzazione delle Lingue dei Segni adottate nei Paesi firmatari, come Stato membro deve offrirci il riconoscimento della LIS come premessa ad una più completa integrazione.
2. LIS e LMG sono due cose diverse. Noi non accettiamo la definizione di “Linguaggio Mimico Gestuale” per la nostra lingua. Con quella definizione verremmo considerati cittadini di livello inferiore. Invece noi chiediamo pari rispetto e dignità.
3. Sono anni che spieghiamo al Governo italiano il valore della nostra lingua e le ragioni delle nostre richieste. Pensavamo che con l’approvazione in Senato della proposta di legge l’iter legislativo fosse a buon punto; invece i problemi recentemente sorti alla Camera hanno dimostrato che non c’è una reale comprensione.Il fatto che molti Paesi del Mondo abbiano riconosciuto la Convenzione ONU e che proprio lo Stato italiano, nonostante sia un firmatario di tale Convenzione, proponga la definizione “LMG” per la Lingua dei Segni Italiana significa che c’è una contraddizione in atto che va immediatamente risolta.Altri Stati, sebbene a livelli diversi – costituzionale, governativo o parlamentare – hanno già riconosciuto le lingue dei segni locali e approvato disposizioni mirate a concretizzare il diritto delle persone sorde ad usare tali lingue.

4. La proposta di legge, nella versione approvata al Senato, non comporta costi ulteriori per lo Stato italiano oltre a quelli già regolarmente sostenuti. Noi non chiediamo nuovi fondi, solo il riconoscimento della nostra lingua!

A summary of an interview with Roberto Petrone

1. The signing community, composed of deaf and hearing people, ask for the recognition of their language. Italy has signed and ratified the EU Convention on the rights of people with disabilities, in which contains the precise outlines for the recognition of sign languages in the representative countries that signed the Convention. As a member state, Italy must offer the recognition of LIS as promised in its entirety.

2. LIS and LMG are two different things. We do not accept the definition of “Mimeo-Gestural Communication” as our language. With this definition we would be considered as inferior citizens. Instead, we ask for equal respect and dignity.

3. We have explained for years to the Italian government the value of our language and the reasons of our request. We believed that the approval of the proposed bill by the Senate was a good step; however the recent problems coming from the Chamber of Deputies has shown that they truly don’t understand us.

The fact that many countries throughout the world have recognized the UN Convention, and our Italian nation, regardless of the fact that it was a signer of this Convention, proposes the definition of “LMG” for Italian Sign Language means that there is a contradiction that needs to be immediately resolved.

Other countries, at various levels – constitutional, governmental, or parliamentary – have already recognized their respective sign languages and approved practical applications of the rights of deaf people and the use of their language.

4. The proposed bill, in the version that was approved by the Senate, does not ask for financial support from the Italian government other than what is already in place. We do not ask for more funds, only for the recognition of our language!
